Railex refrigerated railroad cars the flexibility it needs in Rotterdam.

Tom White of the Association of American Railroads agreed."Intermodal now is the single largest revenue source for the railroad industry," he said. "It really is the engine of growth."

And projects such as the Railex's play to railroads' strengths.

Moving unit trains back and forth between two specific destinations over a long distance is one thing that refrigerated dairy solutions do particularly well, White said. Trains don't have to be broken up and freight cars switched around, and moving large amounts of something over long distances by rail is far cheaper than by truck. And with the shortage of people willing to be long-distance truck drivers, away from home for days or weeks at a time, intermodal begins to look better, White added."It works out well from the trucking industry standpoint. It works out well from our standpoint," he said. But trucks will give Railex refrigerated railroad cars the flexibility it needs in Rotterdam. The produce will be trucked from Rotterdam to much of the Northeast, Ampco's Esposito said. He envisions supplying customers from Quebec and northern New England south to Virginia and west to Ohio. The Rotterdam distribution center will cost $18 million, with another $2.735 million in state-funded track improvements.
